The 2010 U.S. Census population figure for Chesterfield County is 316,236. The Chesterfield Planning Department has estimated that the population for Chesterfield on January 1, 2012 was 319,000. Chesterfield is the largest locality in the Richmond, Virginia MSA and the third largest county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Only the counties of Fairfax, and Prince William, and the city of Virginia Beach have larger populations.
